Fancy Gap RV Camping: What we like
The top 3 things we liked about our Fancy Gap RV camping experience are:
1. We loved the Blue Ridge Mountains views and the fresh air.
2. Beautiful scenery and various hiking opportunities.
3. We really enjoyed the peaceful, relaxing time we had RV camping at the KOA, plus everyone was so friendly!
RV Camping at Fancy Gap KOA Journey

Our recent RV camping in VA led us to trip to Fancy Gap and it was a delightful escape. We stayed for 4 days and chose to unplug at Fancy Gap KOA Journey. The KOA is nestled atop Fancy Gap Mountain, it offers (and delivers!) a serene retreat with modern campground amenities. We really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the natural beauty surrounding us. The owners were very friendly and attentive, the campground is clean and well maintained. We will definitely stay there again!

The Fancy Gap KOA campground caters to various camping preferences. They offer RV camping sites with full hook-ups up to 50-amp service and lengths accommodating up to 75 feet. We opted for a patio site and loved it! There’s also an area for tent campers, while those seeking comfort can opt for cozy cabins. You can find the usual amenities at many KOA campgrounds such as Wi-Fi, cable TV, a seasonal pool, snack bar, propane services, a dog park and a Kamping Kitchen. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the on-site pond, and the well-stocked camp store ensures you have all necessities.

Hiking Areas and more:
Visiting Devil’s Den Nature Preserve would’ve been one of the highlights of our RV camping trip but sadly, it didn’t happen as it is closed from December 1st until May 1st. This will be something we do next time! Devil’s Den is part of a 280-acre preserve that features mature hardwood forests and unique rock formations. The main attraction is a 600-million-year-old cave formation known as Devil’s Den. If you are into hiking, a strenuous 1.5-mile loop trail leads through diverse habitats, with a spur trail offering views of the cave. Note: due to instability, public access inside the cave is restricted.
Beyond Devil’s Den, this region of Virginia offers numerous hiking opportunities. The New River State Park is a linear park with a trail. We didn’t get to go there but The Blue Ridge Parkway provides access to trails suitable for all skill levels. We enjoyed a leisurely hike along these nearby trails, taking in panoramic views and the area’s natural beauty. The cool mountain air and scenery made our experience memorable.
Other hiking options include Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve. A 2.1 mile moderately challenging trail that takes a little over an hour outand-back. Keep in mind it is a popular spot which makes finding parking there difficult as it consists of only 10 gravel spaces. You can also enjoy hiking at Cumberland Knob-Gully Creek Trailhead or if you’re up for a longer drive you can head to Crystal Spring Recreation Area for some hiking or even biking.
If visiting vineyards is more your style then you might want to check out Round Peak Vineyards or Chateau Morrisette Winery. This last one is on our list for our next RV camping trip to the area.
Nearby Stores and Restaurants
Fancy Gap has several stores and eateries to explore. In addition to The Gap Deli, we discovered local shops offering unique crafts and souvenirs. We brought home more than we needed! At the Fancy Gap Country Store you will find a selection of local goods that includes jams, jellies, and handmade items. For a broader shopping experience, the town of Hillsville is a short drive away from the campground, offering additional dining and retail options. Don’t want to go out? You can just stay in your RV and order homemade pizza or a BBQ pulled pork sandwich from the campground’s own Dave’s Smokehouse.
Final Thoughts
If you are near Virginia and want to unwind and take a break from the husle and bustle of life this is a good campground to do so. Our stay at Fancy Gap KOA was a refreshing retreat into nature. The combination of comfortable accommodations, scenic hiking, natural attractions, and local charm made RV camping in VA an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re an avid camper, a hiking enthusiast, or just seeking a peaceful getaway, Fancy Gap KOA and its surroundings offer something special for everyone. We will definitely be back and we’ll be sure to visit Devil’s Den.
